The first unit was in service in 1986. There are 50 units in the class, numbered 35/3601-50.
3500 class locomotives are fitted with Locotrol.

Bluff Yard sees 3 coal trains and the west bound Spirit of the Outback on September 14th, 1998. The Spirit was on the wrong track due to a points failure on the platform road.
