The 49 class was built by Clyde Engineering at Clyde, NSW.
The first unit was in service on September 20th, 1960. There were 18 units in the class, numbered 4901-4918.
They have an 8 cylinder GM-567C or GM-567CR engine.
They weigh 81.3 tonnes and have 875 HP available for traction.
