The 86 class was built by Commonwealth Engineering (ComEng) at Granville, NSW.
The first unit was in service on March 15th, 1983. There were 50 units in the class, numbered 8601-8650.
They are a 1500V DC electric locomotive. 8650 has a Bo-Bo-Bo wheel arrangement. All others were Co-Co.
They weigh 119 tonnes and have a continuous rating of 3618 HP.
